A vintage kimono is more than clothing. Each one carries the craftsmanship, patterns, and seasons of the era it was made in. If you're buying your first one, this guide will help you choose a piece that fits your style and purpose.
1. Decide how you'll use it
Start with the purpose. Do you want to wear it traditionally, style it casually as a jacket or robe, or display it as art? For casual wear, a lightweight kimono or haori (a short kimono-style jacket) is easy to style over modern clothes. For display, bold patterns and vivid colors stand out beautifully on a wall.
2. Know the main types
- Furisode: long, flowing sleeves and bright designs, traditionally worn by young women on formal occasions.
- Homongi: semi-formal, with patterns that flow across the seams.
- Komon: small repeating patterns all over, suited to everyday and casual wear.
- Haori: a hip- or thigh-length jacket, and the easiest piece to wear with Western clothes.
3. Check the size
Kimono are cut to be wrapped and adjusted, so fit is flexible, but two measurements matter most: the total length (from the shoulder to the hem) and the sleeve length (yuki, from the center of the back to the wrist). Compare these with a garment you already own. Vintage kimono were often made for smaller frames, so check the measurements in each listing carefully.
4. Look at the fabric
Silk is the classic choice, with a soft drape and natural sheen. Wool and cotton kimono are more casual and easier to care for. Synthetic fabrics became common in later decades and are practical for frequent wear.
5. Understand vintage condition
Small signs of age, such as faint spots, light fading, or minor wear, are normal in pre-owned kimono and are part of their history. Read the condition notes and look closely at the photos, especially around the collar, cuffs, and hem.
6. Care and storage
Air your kimono out after wearing and avoid direct sunlight. Store it folded flat along its original seams, ideally wrapped in paper or breathable fabric, and keep it away from humidity. For silk, professional cleaning is the safest option.
